Understanding the Risk

Many residents still associate wildfires with hot summer months. But recent wildfires like the Palisades (Jan 2025) and Eaton Fires (Jan 2025) have proven that California's fire risk spans the entire year.

How Wildfires Start

Fires don’t need 100-degree days to ignite. All it takes is:

  • Dead or dying vegetation
  • Low humidity
  • Strong seasonal winds (Diablo or Santa Ana)

Embers can travel miles and ignite dry brush around homes and structures any time of year.

Ordinance No. 24-01: What It Means for You

All property owners in the Woodside Fire Protection District must maintain:

  • Zone 0 (0–5 ft): Clear all combustibles next to structures
  • Zone 1 (5–30 ft): Remove ladder fuels and space out shrubs
  • Zone 2 (30–100 ft): Mow grass to 4", trim trees, remove dead brush

Top Reasons to Maintain Your Property Year-Round

  1. Protect Your Home: Fires can start anytime.
  2. Comply with Local Law: Ordinance No. 24-01 requires action.
  3. Support Firefighters: Clear access aids emergency response.
  4. Prevent Environmental Damage: Fires destroy ecosystems and air quality.

Action Steps

  • Inspect your property monthly
  • Remove combustible material
  • Trim branches 10 ft from chimneys & roofs
  • Keep roads and driveways accessible
