What are N5 sensors?

“N5SHIELD™’s real-time alerts enable rapid emergency response, augmenting the capabilities of our first responders and fire fighters. N5SHIELD™ protects communities using sensors, data and intelligence. Current capabilities include early detection of wildfires, tracking movement of fires, and smoke and hazardous air quality events. ” - N5sensors.comimage of an n5 sensor mounted on a post with a solar panel to charge it.

About the Program:

The N5 sensor technology is an advanced system designed to enhance early wildfire detection and monitoring capabilities. Through a Department of Homeland Security pilot program, we have partnered with Palo Alto Fire and Stanford to deploy this innovative technology across key areas. A total of 50 sensors have been strategically placed, with 13 in the Woodside Fire Protection District, 12 within Palo Alto Fire's jurisdiction, and 25 on Stanford land. This deployment ensures comprehensive coverage, with some overlapping zones to maximize detection accuracy and response effectiveness. This collaborative effort strengthens wildfire preparedness, providing real-time data to first responders and improving overall community safety.

Our District:

The new N5 sensors will help the Woodside Fire Protection District enhance community safety by providing early wildfire detection. These sensors allow us to respond quickly,  reducing the risk of large-scale fires and ensuring faster evacuations when needed.

How it works:

Network of ground based sensors:

  • Detects smoke, gasses, and heat associated with fire
  • Mimics human recognition of fire through multiple senses

Powerful AI and Machine Learning:

  • Recognizes pattern associated with nearby fire to generate alerts
  • Low false alarm rate (<0.1%)

Data and alert management:

AI and human intelligence for accurate alert processing
Instant text notification + dashboard, iOS and Android Apps

The N5 sensors are cutting-edge devices being installed throughout our fire district to help protect our community from potential fire hazards. These sensors provide early detection of smoke, heat, and other signs of fire, giving emergency responders crucial information to respond faster and more effectively. By monitoring environmental conditions around the clock, N5 sensors act as an extra layer of safety for our residents, helping to safeguard lives and property. This initiative underscores our commitment to leveraging advanced technology for a safer, more resilient community.
