Fuel Mitigation Projects & Ongoing Work

The Woodside Fire Protection District's Fuel Mitigation Division works year-round to reduce wildfire risk throughout the community. Over the years, the Division has completed vegetation management and fuel reduction projects through partnerships with the Town of Woodside, the Town of Portola Valley, and San Mateo County. The District has also collaborated with San Mateo County Parks and the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District on projects supported through CAL FIRE grant funding.

2026 Projects

So far in 2026, the Fuel Mitigation Division has completed multiple wildfire risk reduction projects across the District.

Los Trancos

Crews recently completed hand-pulling of invasive French broom on department-owned property. The Division also hosted its annual volunteer workday, where community members worked alongside WFPD Mitigation staff to support local fuel reduction efforts. Crews are scheduled to return later this spring to continue clearing annual grasses in the area.

Ladera

The District's Fuel Management Engineer identified seven large pine trees within the public right-of-way near La Mesa Drive that posed a wildfire and safety concern. Through County-funded mitigation efforts, the trees were professionally removed to reduce wildfire and safety risk to nearby properties.

Woodside

The Mitigation Division also returned to a Town-owned property in Woodside to perform follow-up maintenance and manage new vegetation growth as part of ongoing fuel reduction efforts.

Seasonal Grass Clearance

Crews recently completed annual grass maintenance around District fire stations and continue to monitor conditions throughout the community. While crews handle station areas, residents are also encouraged to cut and clear annual grasses on their properties as temperatures rise and grasses cure — an important step in reducing wildfire risk.

Hydrant Clearance and Access

The Fuel Mitigation Division also assists with vegetation clearance around California Water Service hydrants throughout the Fire District. Because of the size of the service area and limited time available, crews prioritize hydrants located in the highest-risk and most hazardous areas to help maintain emergency access for firefighters during an incident.
